Monroe Avenue sign design Monroe Avenue sign design

The sign above is an example of a wayfinding sign. To the left is a a design for a historical marker.

The interlocking “M” and “A” at the top of the sign symbolizes the way in which Monroe Avenue links the diverse communities it travels through.

The script-like “Monroe” is more than simply a pleasing design element. The letter forms are traced from the signature of James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. His two terms in office coincided with the building of the Erie Canal, 1817-1825. The Canal was essential to Rochester’s growth. A 19th century Erie Canal boat is depicted at the bottom of the signs.

The shape of the sign is an adaptation of the shape of a New York State highway sign, which is in keeping with Monroe Avenue being New York State Route 31.
